How to review and remove duplicate photos on iPhone

By Grove LLC · Updated

The short answer

Check the Duplicates collection in Apple Photos for detected duplicates. For similar shots and a wider keep-or-delete review, SnapSweep groups near-identical photos and helps compare quality before you approve removals.

Start with the duplicate tools already on your iPhone

Apple Photos can identify duplicates and let you merge a detected group. In current versions, look under Collections → Utilities → Duplicates. The collection may not appear when Photos has not identified duplicates. The precise navigation can vary with your iOS version.

A duplicate and a similar photo are not always the same thing. Two exports of one image may be redundant, while two almost identical portraits may have different expressions. Decide which distinction matters before doing a large cleanup.

Compare similar shots deliberately

SnapSweep offers quality scoring, duplicate detection, and a swipe review flow. Treat its recommendation as a starting point. Check faces, sharpness, and any detail that is personally important before choosing which photo to keep.

  1. Start with a small date range or album you recognize.
  2. Compare the strongest candidate with the other shots in its group.
  3. Keep images with unique expressions, documents, or details even if they look similar.
  4. Review the proposed deletion batch before approving it.
  5. Check the remaining library before moving to another date range.

Keep cleanup reversible while you review

Do not assume that a quality score knows which memory matters most. A blurry image can still be the only photo of an important moment. SnapSweep does not remove photos automatically; you approve the deletions.

If you use iCloud Photos, review Apple's guidance on how deletion affects the library on your other devices. Avoid permanently emptying Recently Deleted while you are still checking the cleanup. Start small, confirm the result, and then repeat the process rather than trying to clear years of photos in one pass.

Common questions

Does SnapSweep delete photos automatically?

No. You approve deletion decisions before anything is removed.

Why compare photos if Apple's Duplicates collection exists?

Built-in duplicate merging is a useful first step. Similar photos can require a separate judgment about expression, sharpness, and which shot you want to keep.
