Use a gym rest timer without unlocking your iPhone between sets

By Grove LLC · Updated

The short answer

Choose your set and rest durations in Nextset, tap Start, and put your iPhone away. The timer repeats the cycle and plays a chime when the next set starts. Pause, skip, or end through the lock-screen Live Activity.

Set up the cycle before you start

A normal countdown needs you to start it again after every set. A repeating set-and-rest cycle lets you set the routine once, then keep the phone in your pocket. Nextset alternates the durations you choose and counts the completed cycles.

Choose timings that fit your own workout plan. This guide explains the timer controls; it does not prescribe how long you should lift or rest. If you change exercises or need more time, pause the cycle and adjust rather than treating the chime as a requirement to continue.

Test the cue and lock-screen controls

Before relying on the app in a busy gym, try a short test with the music and headphones you actually use. Confirm that the cue is audible and that the Live Activity appears after you lock the phone.

  1. Choose a set duration, a rest duration, and a target number of sets, or leave the target unlimited.
  2. Pick one of the eight chime sounds and an optional repeat count from one to five.
  3. Tap Start and check one complete cycle with your usual music playing.
  4. Lock the phone and check Pause, Skip, and End on the Live Activity.
  5. Use Dynamic Island for a countdown glance if your iPhone supports it.

Keep the timer useful throughout the session

Nextset briefly lowers other audio while the cue plays, then lets the music resume at its normal level. The lock-screen controls let you pause for a longer break, skip to the next set, or end when you are finished without repeatedly unlocking the phone.

A target set count also gives you a whole-session time estimate. Treat that as the timer's planned cycle length; equipment waits, exercise changes, and pauses can make the actual visit longer. Nextset is free, has no subscriptions or in-app purchases, and requires iOS 17 or later on iPhone.

Common questions

Do I need an iPhone with Dynamic Island?

No. Nextset requires iOS 17 or later. Live Activity controls appear on the lock screen; Dynamic Island is an additional display on compatible iPhones.

Can I keep listening to music?

Yes. The cue briefly ducks other audio while it plays, then normal music volume resumes. Test the sound with your own listening setup before the session.
